Practice Information

Prescriptive Authority

NPs and GNPs have the legislated authority to prescribe Scheduled and Unscheduled drugs as outlined in Prescribing Standards for Nurse Practitioners (2018) document. Controlled drugs and substance can only be prescribed once a member has been authorized by CRNA. Your employer may have guidelines in place to address which medications you are authorized to prescribe in your practice setting.

When completing prescriptions to be filled by your patient's local pharmacy you must provide your name, followed by the initials NP, your CRNA prescriber ID number, a contact telephone number, and all other legal requirements as per the Prescribing Standards for Nurse Practitioners (2018) document.

Resources for Scheduled Drugs

The list of Schedule 1 drugs is a combination of several lists. In Alberta, it includes:

1. Food and Drug Regulations at: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/c.r.c.,_c._870/index.html

2. Schedules to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-38.8/

3. Drugs placed in Schedule 1 by the National Drug Scheduling Advisory Committee (NDSAC) of the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA).

Please note that the Alberta list varies slightly from other provinces and from NAPRA due to exceptions in the Scheduled Drugs Regulation. Consult the “AB Drug Schedules” page on the Alberta College of Pharmacy website at: https://abpharmacy.ca/drug-schedules and access NAPRA drug schedule information at http://napra.ca/national-drug-schedules.

Alberta College of Pharmacy

We regularly provide the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) with a list of all Alberta NPs and GNPs who have prescribing authority. Only registered ACP members have access to this list. The list allows pharmacists to quickly authenticate and verify prescriptions written by NPs and GNPs.

The NP and GNP prescriber list includes each prescriber’s first and last name, registration number and any conditions on their ability to prescribe. This information is securely stored on the ACP's website and is hosted on a web server located outside of Canada. We have provided consent for this information storage according to the Alberta Privacy and Information Protection Act (PIPA section 13.1(2)).

If you have any questions about how your prescriber information is stored, contact the CRNA Privacy Officer at privacy@nurses.ab.ca or ACP Privacy Officer at privacy@abpharmacy.ca.
