CRNA Application: Currency of Practice NP Expectations

Thank you for your email, the options to meet the currency of practice requirements as a nurse practitioner (NP) are the following: 

Option 1: Practice as a Nurse Practitioner anywhere you are actively registered as an NP. 

Outcomes: 

• Provide evidence of practicing 1000 hours as a nurse practitioner, of which 500 hours must be clinical practice in the applicable stream of practice, within the past 4 practice years. 
• The CRNA will determine if the evidence you submit meets the currency of practice requirement. You may then be eligible for an NP permit in Alberta.  

Option 2: Successful Completion of an approved NP education program. 

• How to Apply: 

• • You do not need a referral from the CRNA for these programs and you may contact the above schools for admission information.  
  • Your permit fee will be refunded, and the current permit application will be withdrawn.  
• Outcomes:
  • Once you successfully complete an initial nurse practitioner program, you will be able to apply for a NP permit.  

If you are unable to meet currency as a nurse practitioner, you may apply as a registered nurse, granted that you meet the RN currency requirements listed here.
